Northfield Township is a community that understands the importance of supporting their youth. Located in southeast Michigan, Northfield is among several townships that were established in the early to mid 1800’s. Within Northfield, there are several smaller communities; one of which is Whitmore Lake. Every year, Whitmore Lake is the host of a very important ice hockey tournament.
The Michigan Pond Hockey Classic is a tournament played by adults to raise money for youth who cannot afford to participate in school and local sports programs. Unfortunately, like many schools across the United States, local schools have made financial cuts. These cuts have forced schools to charge parents participation fees, that help offset expenses like uniforms, transportation, and sporting equipment. While some parents are able to afford the fees, many are not, meaning that lower income students miss out on the opportunity to play.
What many people don’t realize is that these missed opportunities are much more than not getting to play a sport. It could mean that a student misses out on a college scholarship, something that would have given them a once in a lifetime chance to go to college. It also means that there are more kids without healthy outlets, or simply with nothing to do, making them more likely to cause trouble.
The Whitmore Lake community sees the value of extracurricular activities for youth, and wants every student to get the chance to join a team. That is why they host the ice hockey tournament every year. The Michigan Pond Hockey Sports Charity was created by Pete Read and Sam Iaquinto, local Whitmore Lake residents. The organization uses its proceeds to cover school and local sport participation fees for low income families. Read and Iaquinto decided to unite their love of hockey with their love for the community. They realized that in their community, hockey is a big deal; they knew that everyone would want to participate in an old fashioned ice hockey tournament. Since 2008, lots of fun and a good cause have made the Michigan Pond Ice Hockey Classic successful. The Michigan Pond Hockey Sports Charity non-profit could tutor us all in supporting our local youth. They are a shining example of how a little thing can make a big difference.
Northfield tutors are also available to support local students. Northfield tutors believe that every student deserves a shot and wants to help. Doing better in one subject that could be the first step to accomplishing something great!

Families share goals and scheduling preferences through a short intake. That information becomes a learner profile. Grade Potential then introduces your profile to a professional independent tutor whose background aligns. Once the tutor accepts, you’re introduced directly and sessions can begin.
Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
