Orangevale has a very interesting and long history in California. With roots that go as deep as the mid 1800s, Orangevale was once called "Orange Vale Colony". This land was a land grant from Mexico, and on it were many groves of orange trees. Besides the orange groves from which it got its name, this area was also home to many olive tree orchards. Primarily rural during that time period, Orange Vale Colony continued to develop throughout the years but still maintains its rural charm to this day.

The San Juan Unified School District serves the residents of Orangevale, and provides a high quality of education to students throughout the community. Six public elementary schools, two public junior high schools, and one public high school serves the community of Orangevale.
