    About Folsom

The city of Folsom, California, might be best known for Johnny Cash’s concerts at the Folsom State Prison. Those performances put Cash, the prison, and the city on the map. More than fifty years after he recorded “Folsom Prison Blues,” Folsom honors Johnny Cash’s life and music.

The city, intent on advancing public art, providing more recreational trails, and the commemorating the importance of Johnny Cash, unanimously approved the Johnny Cash Trail Art Experience. Meant to preserve and celebrate his legacy, the trail holds a significant place in the heart of Folsom community members. This would also provide an opportunity for Folsom tutors to expand the depth of interest and cultural influence for students.

In early 2014, The Johnny Cash Trail opened for public use. The 2.5-mile bike trail will cross over the prison property and connect to Folsom Lake Trail. The Johnny Cash Overcrossing, part of the Johnny Cash Art Trail, was inspired by the architecture of Folsom Prison and was built to showcase the rich history of the city. Because Cash’s song “Folsom Prison Blues” thrust the singer, along with the city, into the limelight, the town felt it was only right that the trail be named in his honor.

Not only is the trail named after The Man in Black, it will also include public art installments themed around the life and legacy of the musician. The Johnny Cash Trail Art Experience will have a two-acre Art Park with eight pieces comprising the collection. At each end, a seven-foot tall guitar will stand marking the beginning and end of the trail. Meant to be an interactive experience, fans of the musician will flock from around the world to visit the first-class destination. The Johnny Cash Legacy Park, a small outdoor amphitheater, is planned, as well, and it will house a 50-foot Man in Black sculpture, and can either be an area for impromptu concerts or a spot to rest, relax, and reflect. An opportunity for reflection is helpful for those seeking to learn, which tutoring in Folsom could provide.

The prison concerts brought the city of Folsom acclaim and international stardom, but it skyrocketed Cash’s career, as well. Both were changed forever, so it only seems fitting that the memory of The Man in Black would serve the city to once again find it’s place in the spotlight, and bring a piece of Johnny Cash back to Folsom.
