    About Great Kills

Great Kills is a neighborhood in Staten Island, New York. The name Great Kills, actually refers to the number of small streams that run throughout the neighborhood. Kill is an old Dutch word that can be used in reference to a creek or channel. The large amount of streams in the area made Great Kills a very appropriate name.

When most people think of New York, they think of the city, and the fast-paced urban lifestyle. But what many people don’t realize, is that New York actually has a lot of natural open space and wildlife behind the scenes of all the hustle and bustle. One beautiful outdoor retreat is Great Kills Park. Great Kills Park is five hundred and eighty acres of open land, where visitors enjoy the best of outdoor recreation. There is an abundance of wildlife, and Great Kills Park happens to be the only nesting site of osprey on Staten Island. Osprey, also known as Sea Hawks, are an impressive predatory bird that eat fish and live off the coast. The park provides special nesting platforms for the birds; providing a safe place for the osprey to thrive, and great vantage points for visitors. Those less interested in bird watching are able to simply relax on the beach, take a swim, surf, hike, bike, and more. The trails and shoreline make a great place for nature lovers to enjoy a scenic walk through the beautiful outdoor haven. The park is also a great place for boating and fishing.

The Park was originally owned by John J. Crooke. Crooke was known as a pioneering naturalist and took a great interest in the areas natural resources. He lived in a log cabin by the shore, and enjoyed taking nature pictures, and collecting plant and animal specimens. Crooke also had a respectable library and natural history collection, and collaborated with several other naturalists of the time. Crooke probably even tutored his colleagues about the interesting specimens he collected on his property. In 1929, Crooke’s Point as it was called, was sold to the City of New York, who hoped to turn the area into a park. Those plans were unfortunately put on hold, because of the stock market crash later that year. The city was finally able to create Great Kills Park, and it was officially open to the public in 1949. In 1973, the park became a national park site.
