    About Chesapeake

The town of Chesapeake may not have been around for long but the land it holds has historical sites around every corner. Much of America’s colonial history was built in the Chesapeake area. From Civil War victories to one of the oldest operating canals, history buffs do not want to miss what this town has to offer. Chesapeake was created in the early fifties when there was an annexation suit with the city of Norfolk and South Norfolk. Both cities gave up land to create a new city which was voted on by residents of both cities. Chesapeake was then born. The area remained a unique blend of rural and urban areas. While towns grew around them, this continued to grow while keeping up their historical value. There are three historical highlights in Chesapeake which have been kept up to remember America’s heritage.

Less than a year before America claimed its independence in 1776, the Battle of Great Bridge took place on Chesapeake’s land. On December 9, 1775, America was early into the Revolutionary War. Within Chesapeake, lies Great Bridge. Here took place a major victory for the American’s against the British. Virginia Militia forces moved out Royal Governor Lord Dunmore and other British power out of the colony of Virginia. The militia drove the British through Norfolk where they had taken refuge. Tensions between both sides focused on the area of Norfolk. Visitors can come to the Battle of Great Bridge site and watch reenactments of the Battle. A tutor in your area can help you study to get grades to help you succeed. Chesapeake also sits on a 22-mile canal that trails on the eastern border of the Great Dismal Swamp. Built in the early 1790s, the Dismal Swamp Canal was partly funded by George Washington himself. During the Civil War, in 1862, the Confederacy used the waterway as an alternative supply route. The Canal route has also been noted on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. These are just a few reasons why the Dismal Swamp Canal is on the National Register of Historic Places and remains in use today.

For those who want to embrace every inch of Civil War history in and around Chesapeake, they can join the Virginia Civil War Trails. The trail includes visits to Village of Great Bridge, Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery, Seven Patriot Heroes and much more. Along the trail are several Civil War battle sites. Among these sites is a rich African American history. The trail covers a path used for the Underground Railroad and other historic sites such as the Newsome House. Chesapeake saw growth like its neighboring cities but still held onto its Civil War history. They continue to hold on to their farmlands and embrace their value to American history.
