    About Alpharetta

Located in Georgia's north Fulton County, Alpharetta was named after a fictional Indian girl, Alfarata, who was mentioned in a song "The Blue Juniata" in the 19th century. And for those who know the Greek alphabet, the city's name also supposedly is based on the first letter of the Greek alphabet.

The corporations who chose Alpharetta as the perfect city in which to work, however, care more about the ideal climate and ease of access than the origin of its name. Famous companies who operate in Alpharetta include AT&T, Costco, General Electric, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Verizon, and MetLife.

When residents aren't working, they have a wealth of options for relaxing and enjoying their time off. Families flock to the Alpharetta Family Skate Center, which also serves as the home to the Atlanta Sparks special needs hockey team.

Fall is a special time in Alpharetta. On the first Saturday in October, the Alpharetta Brew Moon Fest attracts locals as well as visitors to the downtown Alpharetta. The special event is at the same time as the Scarecrow Harvest, during which 100 scarecrows line the streets to welcome autumn.

In an era where parents sometimes have issues trying to get kids away from those computer games, the Alpharetta Arboretum at Wills Park provides a welcome option. Families can enjoy a walking tour of the 26 trees keeping the park cool and inviting.

Looking for something good to eat? On Saturday mornings, head to the Saturday morning Alpharetta Farmers Market. This weekly farmers' market attracts residents to the downtown area from April to October. The wealth of everything from jam to fresh vegetables to flowers earned the market the "Best Saturday Morning Excursion" honors in Atlanta magazine.

History buffs can visit the Downtown Alpharetta Historic District, which features buildings that date from the late 19th century. Among the special places in the city, the Mansell House and Gardens provides a place for special events and houses the Alpharetta Historical Society. The Queen Anne-style building dates back to 1912, while the Milton Log Cabin, built by Future Farmers of America students in the early 1930s, shows a glimpse of life in the late 19th century.

For those seeking something special in the summer, check the schedule at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park. This famous 12,000-capacity outdoor venue provides a home in the summer to the Grammy Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The Dave Matthews Band, Rod Stewart and the Eagles are among the acts that have played at the theater.
