Math Standards And Curriculums In Miami, FL

Elementary School

Miami-Dade County Public Schools follows Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for Mathematics, adopted in 2020 after Florida moved away from Common Core. Grades K through 5 build core skills in whole number operations, place value, fractions, measurement, and word problems. In 2025, M-DCPS elementary students performed above the state average in several FAST math grades, including grades 3 and 4.

Middle School

Grades 6 through 8 move into ratios, proportions, equations, geometry, statistics, and the foundations of algebra. Advanced students may take Algebra 1 in middle school and sit for the Algebra 1 EOC instead of the grade-level math FAST assessment. Performance during these years can also affect readiness or eligibility for selective magnet programs, including STEM-focused schools such as MAST Academy.

High School

Florida requires four math credits for a standard high school diploma, including Algebra I and Geometry. Students must pass the Algebra I EOC, or earn a comparative score, while EOC results also factor into course performance. M-DCPS high schools may also offer Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB and BC, and AP Statistics, depending on the school.

Math Test Scores In Miami, FL

The FAST measures math proficiency in Florida grades 3 through 8 across three progress monitoring windows: PM1, PM2, and PM3. In 2025, Florida math performance improved statewide, with 58% of students scoring at Level 3 or above by the end-of-year PM3 administration. Miami-Dade outperformed the state in several tested grades, but a meaningful share of students still scored below grade level, leaving room for additional support in core math skills.

SAT Scores

The SAT is widely used by Florida students and can also support eligibility for Bright Futures scholarships. In 2025, Florida’s average SAT score rose to 970, while the national average was 1029. Because Bright Futures awards use SAT or ACT score thresholds, stronger math performance can help students work toward a more competitive total score.

ACT Scores

The ACT can also be used for Bright Futures eligibility. The math section covers skills from pre-algebra through trigonometry, with an emphasis on speed, accuracy, and multi-step problem solving. Families should check the latest Bright Futures handbook for current SAT and ACT score requirements before planning test prep.

Miami-area students can also find enrichment through local university and community programs.
