Euclid Tutors Come To You

Along the shores of Lake Erie in Cuyahoga County, Euclid, Ohio is a large suburb in the Cleveland metropolitan region. In 1796 the area which would become Euclid was surveyed by the Connecticut Land Company led by General Moses Cleaveland. Because of the harsh working conditions in the heavily forested land in northern Ohio, the party of surveyors were given the opportunity to buy land at $1 an acre. The land included lake front property as well as potential agricultural plots further inland. The settlers named the area after the ancient Greek mathematician who is considered the “patron saint” of surveyors. For such a cheap price the new land owners were obliged to clear the forests, build houses and establish agricultural production. By 1809 Euclid was an incorporated township with general stores, banks and schools. Along with farming, fishing, rock quarries and lumber production dominated the local economy for most of the 19th century. For a time in the early 1800’s Euclid was considered even more important than Cleveland but with the opening of the Erie and Ohio canals, that changed and Cleveland grew much more rapidly. By the early 1900’s, in fact, Cleveland’s industrial interests began infiltrating Euclid’s city limits. In response, Euclid’s Zoning Board passed rules to prevent factories and heavy industry from moving into otherwise residential areas. In the landmark case Village of Euclid vs. Ambler Realty the U.S. Supreme Court decided in favor of Euclid’s zoning regulations paving the way for cities all over the country to pass common sense land use ordinances. Today, Euclid has easy access to Cleveland along the Lakeland Freeway which leads right to prominent city sites centered around the Cleveland Lake Front.

A Euclid tutor is certain to keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time away from the books to enjoy the many things to do in Euclid and the greater Cleveland area. Not far from Lake Erie, the city features expansive green space including Memorial Park and the Briardale Greens Municipal Golf Course. The 56-acre park offers a variety of year-round recreational opportunities for city residents. Athletic fields, including four baseball/softball diamonds, a pond and skate park are a few of the park’s several amenities. The park has recently seen several upgrades and renovations. Briardale Greens is labeled a “challenging yet player friendly” 18-hole course with tree lined fairways, bunkers and rolling greens. The course also features both snack and dining options at the aptly named Sticks Pub and Grille.

For something completely different, Euclid is home to the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame and Museum. Founded in 1987 the museum is pledged with preserving and promoting polka music. Dubbed by the museum’s website, “the happiest sound around,” Cleveland-Style polka comes from Slovenian roots with American contributions. Located in the Shore Cultural Center, the museum contains artifacts, photographs, recordings and memorabilia from sources both old and new. The museum also hosts the annual Slovenian Sausage Festival in the fall.

For an examination of a totally different type of music, it’s just a short drive west from Euclid to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in downtown Cleveland. First gaining popularity in the 1950’s, rock and roll is considered quintessentially American music. Designed by renowned Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei, the hall of fame building contains seven levels with the main gallery on the first level. Named after hall of fame founder Ahmet Ertegun, the main gallery features sections about the roots of the music and, of course, special exhibits about the heroes of rock and roll such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix.
