Elyria Tutors Come To You

About 30 miles east of Cleveland and just south of Lake Erie, Elyria, Ohio is the seat of Lorain County. Founded in 1796, initial growth was slow in the Cleveland area with only a trickle of settlers taking up residence along the shores of Lake Erie. One such settler was Massachusetts born Heman Ely who built a house, sawmill and dam on the Black River in 1817. Ely prospered and by the 1820’s was a major player in Ohio politics. He successfully lobbied Ohio legislators to establish the Lorain County seat in Elyria and he even gave the county its name after his travels to Lorraine, France. Ely donated much of the land which is now Elyria as well as the land for the county’s main governmental buildings. Ely had three children with the eldest, Heman Jr., becoming an important citizen in the town named after his father. The younger Ely founded the Lorain Bank which would eventually morph into the First National Bank of Elyria. He served as director and president of the bank and was instrumental in securing funding for the Lake Shore railway connecting Cleveland to Toledo. Ely was also a prominent member of the community in social circles with membership in organizations such as the Masons, Knight’s Templars and the Congregational Church. Ely’s obituary published by the Elyria Republican on his death in 1894 boasts that he was a man of “high character, pure manhood, and genuine human sympathy.” By the time of Ely’s death at the end of the 19th century Elyria had over 5,000 residents, two banks, two newspapers, seven churches and manufacturing companies including Elyria’s largest employer, the Lorain Canning Company. Today, Elyria is home to several global companies and University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center is considered one of the best hospitals in Ohio.

An Elyria tutor will keep you caught up on your most difficult academic courses so you can take time to check out the exciting things to do in Elyria and the greater Cleveland metropolitan region. Cascade Park on the banks of the Black River offers 135 acres of green space with rushing waters, tumbling waterfalls and forested woods. Remnants of Native American fortress sites centuries old dot the Black River landscape. The park occupies land donated to Elyria by the Ely family at the end of the 1800’s. The park features hiking trails, kayaking, winter sledding and picnic areas. Outdoor enthusiasts will also want to visit nearby Black River Reservation with more than three miles of nature trails where hikers can view a variety of wildlife.

It’s not far from Elyria to the 183-acre Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Founded as the Cleveland Zoological Park at Wade Park in 1882 the zoo moved to its current location in 1907. That same year it acquired its first elephant. In 1910 it opened Monkey Island, a pool for sea lions and a moated bear habitat. Today, the main exhibits include the RainForest which houses more than 600 animals. Ocelots, orangutans and anteaters are among the mammals in the RainForest which is also home to exotic birds such as the scarlet ibis. The African Savanna is highlighted by Monkey Island, renovated in 1934, and once the home of 150 monkeys. Today, only seven monkeys live on the island which is structured with tree trunks, ropes and shelters. Apart from the island, the Savanna has elephants, rhinos and lions.

For sports fans, it’s just a short drive from Elyria to downtown Cleveland which is home to several professional sports teams. Currently the most popular of those teams is the Cleveland Cavaliers who brought the NBA World Championship to the city in 2016 behind LeBron James. They play at Quicken Loans Arena. The NFL’s Browns play at First Energy Stadium just south of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. Cleveland is also home to Major League Baseball’s Indians who have played in the American League since 1901.
