Lighthouse Hill is an affluent neighborhood in Staten Island, New York. Lighthouse Hill is located just south of Todt Hill, the highest natural point on the entire Eastern Seaboard, from Florida to Cape Cod. Lighthouse Hill earned its name because of the Staten Island Range Light. Also known as the Ambrose Channel Range Light, the lighthouse is a 90 foot tower that is 141 feet above sea level. At such a great height, the range light can be seen for eighteen miles. A range light is a tower that is paired with another lighthouse called the front light. At nighttime, and during periods of poor visibility, the two lights can only be aligned vertically when a vessel is correctly positioned. When the vessel is off course, the two lights do not align, and navigators know that they must adjust their course accordingly. The Lighthouse was designated as a New York City Landmark in 1968, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. The Staten Island Range Light is still in use today, and is a valuable asset to vessels navigating the Ambrose Channel in Lower New York Bay.
Another famous spot in Lighthouse Hill is the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art. Jacques Marchais was an American woman who lived from 1887 to 1948. Machias wanted to create a museum to bridge the gap between the West and Tibet, and the Himalayan region. Marchias also wanted to tutor visitors about the Tibetan and Himalayan cultures through art and interesting artifacts. Marchias originally opened an art gallery in Manhattan in 1939; but in 1947, her desire to find a more permanent location led her to open the Museum in Lighthouse Hill.
Today, the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, has one of the most extensive collections of Himalayan artifacts in the U.S. The museum was designed to resemble a Himalayan monastery and in addition to the main building, the museum offers terraced gardens and grounds, as well as a fish and lotus pond. The Dalai Lama visited the Museum in 1991, and praised the authenticity of the building’s architecture and landscape. Amazingly, Marchais never visited Tibet or the Himalayas; she simply appreciated the region and culture. In 2009, the museum was added to the New York State Register, and the National Register of Historic Places.
