As many settlements in this area of Georgia got their start, Suwanee saw a huge boost in their economic activity as the railroad arrived in the late 1800s. Built along the Chattahoochee River, Suwanee was a local center for trade. After experiencing a devastating fire in the early 1880s, the population of Suwanee was stagnant, and barely grew for several decades. At this time in history, fires were a fairly common disaster, and they were hard to tame.

There are several reasons why Suwanee stands out, and one is the vast array of activities and events available to residents. There is always so much to do, and so many ways for community members to get involved in their city.

The parks available in Suwanee are all well manicured and maintained. A local initiative that passed in the early 2000s awarded Suwanee with bond money to fund natural spaces in the community. Several new parks have been designed and built as a result, and families love these new open spaces. In more recent years, the community has focused on improving existing parks, and this beautification project is ongoing.

Suwanee is located in Gwinnett County, and the county manages all of the local parks in the city. The Gwinnett County parks system is also in charge of the sports leagues and recreational programs that Suwanee offers to its residents. Boasting programs for all ages and interests, families find that the local sports facilities and community centers have something fun for everyone.

One of the most beautiful parks in Suwanee is the Suwanee Creek Greenway. A wonderful place that promotes an active lifestyle, runners, walkers, and bikers all find the nature trails to be perfect for making their way around the park. The Suwanee Creek Greenway includes a forested area, along with a natural habitat where children can be on the lookout for native wildlife.

Another local favorite, the Suwanee Creek Disc Golf Course, is located in Suwanee Creek Park. Disc golfers of all skill levels have a blast making their way through the 18-hole course. Wooded areas, water features, and technical spots make this course challenging and exciting.
