The city of Sarasota boasts many claims to fame for visitors and residents who live within its boundaries; it is recognized as being an arts and cultural hub for the state of Florida, with parks, museums, public art displays, and festivals a regular part of the city’s livelihood. Given these facts, it’s no wonder that the famous Wallenda family have operated out of Sarasota for years. Nik Wallenda, specifically, attributes much of his early aspirations to the culture and character of Sarasota.
For readers uninformed, the Wallendas are a multi-generational flying aerialist family, with circus-performing ancestry dating back to Austria-Hungary in the 1700s. Nik Wallenda, one of the youngest members of this large family, was born in Sarasota in 1979. Since both of his parents were tightrope walkers, he spent many formative years observing them and playing on their equipment as the family traveled across the United States performing death-defying feats in different locations. Nik learned early on how to balance properly, and was trained by patient family members to join the family profession—without pressure, he is always certain to clarify in interviews. Nik chose the life of an aerialist on his own, but there’s no doubt early memories of walking across a steel cable in his Sarasota back yard influenced his decisions.
Wallenda has walked a high-wire across the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and the Coronado Plaza Hotel in Puerto Rico, which is the same location where his uncle died attempting the same stunt in 1978. Wallenda has also hung from a helicopter using only his toes, performed feats on the Wheel of Death off rooftops, ridden bicycles across wires high in the air, and received world-wide recognition for his death-defying feats. An estimated 1 billion people across the world watched Wallenda cross Niagara Falls on television, as he was the first individual to cross the falls in this manner.
Wallenda’s training regimen includes six hours of practice per day, acrobatic exercises, cardiovascular training, and a healthy diet. He often cites the importance of mental preparation as well, with a focused mind and prepared body working hand-in-hand for his stunts to be successful. Much can be learned from Nik Wallenda’s life and philosophy, especially by students.
Investing effort and confidence in learning requires a certain bravery, especially for students who are insecure in their abilities to see academic success. Good grades happen because of preparation, however, and tutors in Sarasota are there to instill excellent habits in their clients. Tutors also willingly put in long hours, when necessary, for their students to approach academia with a renewed sense of accomplishment, just as Wallenda does with every new stunt.
