    About Rockledge

Florida’s beaches have attracted tourists for years. Those towns located on the Indian River have been hosting tourists from the north ever since boats were able to bring them there. To escape the cold of the winter, residents of the north came down the Indian River by boat or came by rail to towns like Rockledge. Rockledge itself is the oldest city in Brevard County. During these winter months tourists, invalids and sportsmen made the Rockledge village grow from 200 to 2,000. This lead to the construction of three large hotels. The Plaza, Hotel Indian River, and the Rockledge Hotel were built. Excerpts from a paper recall the hotels being full and guests have to reside in “cottages” which lined the Barton Avenue. Many were being told the Rockledge Hotel would be expanded to accommodate its abundance of guests.

Wealthy guests were attracted to the Indian River hotels because they were the only ones who could afford the travel expenses to get there. Rockledge was only accessible by boat and rail until 1911.Trains would connect travelers to sailboats and large steamers. Passengers would then end up at one the Indian River towns. By the 1880’s the Brevard area was established as a tourist destination. As the railway expanded down Florida, the hotels prospered even more. After World War I travel by automobile started to trend. This began tourist campgrounds were spotted along the highway and tourist homes were sold. By the 1920’s the Dixie Highway was cut the length of the state and was made a Federal Highway, the US#1. Further expansion was headed for Rockledge with the installation of the space shuttle program in Cape Canaveral. Rockledge experienced this growth in the 60’s. Ask a tutor in your area to help you earn the grades you need to succeed. They became known as a bedroom community for the several families at the Kennedy Space Center. Families from all over the United States came to the region and settled there for the Apollo missions and space shuttle programs.

Being founded in 1887, Rockledge is the oldest incorporated municipality in Brevard County. Originally, the area earned their profits from the citrus industry. Citrus would be traded with tourists traveling to the South Florida area on the Indian River. The Marion S. Whaley Citrus Packing house still stands in Rockledge. This house is also known as the Sullivan Brothers Victory Citrus Packing house and was named a US National Historic Place in 1993. Developments in the 50s and 60s covered up much of the worn out orange groves. Levitt Park and Woodmere were some of the developments built atop a groove. They were both built on a gladiola farm and orange grove. Australian Pine trees are all that remains of the Grove's borders. The Indian River is what created Rockledge bringing tourists from the north to visit their tropical weather. With more ways to get here than a boat, Rockledge still remains a popular tourist town.
