At Bayside High School, one of the largest schools in the community, students have come together to form ENCORE, a Fine and Technical Arts Academy to “prepare and empower students to develop their unique artistic talents and skills in order to contribute to the creative industry and their community,” according to the club’s mission statement on the high school’s website.

Study after study has shown that excellence in and appreciation for the arts correlates to greater academic success. Graduation rates are higher among students who have arts programs at their individual schools, from ceramics to music and band to theater and the technical arts, such as computer programming and audio-visual clubs. Higher GPAs also correlate to arts involvement for students, as well as greater post-graduation success in college. Excellence in the arts often means higher self-esteem and self-confidence, especially for young women who struggle with the ups and downs of adolescence.

ENCORE at Bayside High School also encourages students to join for these reasons. ENCORE provides them with a rigorous curriculum in the arts, meaningful cohort relationships, and engages them with opportunities to better the community through the arts. Moreover, the club’s aims are to facilitate students’ transitions from school to work force, with careers that focus on the fine or technical arts. They include: Band, Orchestra, Chorus, Theater, Studio Art, TV Productions, Digital Design, and Mechanical Design, as ENCORE specifically lists on their website.

ENCORE also partners with local arts centers and entities in Palm Bay and the broader Brevard County. The Arts and Cultural Center of Brevard, the Eau Gallie Arts District, local theaters, and the local music scene are all associated with ENCORE, proudly working together to promote the arts in Palm Bay for young and old alike. Not only do students benefit from the arts in an academic and social sense, but more citizens of Palm Bay further benefit as well, thanks to ENCORE’s role in the community.

In addition to ENCORE, Grade Potential is an entity in Palm Bay that helps students succeed—only through tutoring, not music or art. Tutoring, like other programs such as ENCORE, helps students excel and get struggling grades turned around. Tutors in Palm Bay take pride in their work with each and every student, and in doing so, help foster further successes in the city.
