About Melbourne
Florida’s Space Coast is known to be filled with tourist locations along its lagoons and Indian River. Melbourne is just one of the towns here that attract visitors to its steady sunshine and clean beaches. In 1867 the town of Melbourne was founded by former slaves who pioneered the area with their families after the Civil War. The town earned its name from their first postmaster who spent much of his life in Melbourne, Australia before coming to Florida. Melbourne also has a background that very few American towns have. Its town holds its own history dating back to Paleo Indians. Crane Creek in Melbourne is home to a major discovery. What is now named the Melbourne Bone Bed was originally intended to be an orange grove.
During the 1920s, C.P. SIngleton made an enormous discovery. The Harvard University Zoologist discovered the bones of a mammoth on his Crane Creek property. This mammoth among other skeletons found was evidence that Paleo-Indians inhabited the Melbourne area. After Singleton and paleontologist Frederick B. Loomis excavated the first skeleton, another was found with a “large rough flint instrument” with fragments of the elephant's ribs. Many other species were uncovered with the second elephant, all of which were extinct in Florida from over 10,000 years ago. The species found included mastodon, horse, ground sloth, tapir, peccary, camel and saber-tooth cat bones. What made their discovery more fascinating was the remnants of humans. A human rib with charcoal was found at a nearby site with ground sloth teeth. Even a finely worked spear was found with these items. Possibly displaced from a later stratum. Just five years later the spotlight was turned to a new discovery. At the Melbourne golf course, a crushed skull, human finger, arm and leg bones were found with a horse tooth in 1925. The crushed skull and body would be named the “Melbourne Man” and later stored at the Smithsonian Museum. What seemed to be modified by humans, a piece of ivory was also found with the bones. Many more artifacts were found in the same vicinity which was a spear point with a mastodon bone, turtle back scraper and blade found with a bear and other species remains.
Discoveries in Melbourne were only the beginning. More remains of Pleistocene animals and Paleo-Indian artifacts were found areas south of Melbourne. Contact a tutor in your area to improve your grades. Over 40 years after the “Melbourne Man” and other remains were discovered, mammoth teeth among other remains could be found around the golf course. Many paleontologists believe underneath the Melbourne golf course are more human artifacts and animal remains. Fortunately, the golf course is a protected space. Melbourne holds many treasures underneath its roads and golf course that many still hope to unearth.
