    About Indian Harbour Beach

Indian Harbour Beach, a small coastal community on the Atlantic, is characterized by long stretches of white beaches, a tropical climate, and according to a study conducted by NASA, exists in an area with uniquely reduced incidences of destructive hurricanes. Indian Harbour Beach is a safe haven in many regards—an escape from the overly developed urban communities in Florida—but regardless of that relative security, it is also the only community on the east coast of the United States that is a member of NOAA Tsunami Ready, also referred to as StormReady. StormReady is an organization that encourages communities to prepare for severe weather across the country.

StormReady works with local governments and commercial enterprises to designate gathering sites to prepare for severe storms. Much goes in to preparing for severe weather events for individual families—nailing windows shut, removing valuables, evacuating to areas less impacted by the weather, and other practices are undertaken by families every year to get away from potentially dangerous situations. As a community, however, safe spots and gathering places are of equal importance. After individuals prepare and execute their plans, they often are left looking for places to go if they are unable to evacuate for whatever reason. Gathering places need to be planned, with clear instructions to residents where to go and the best routes to arrive. StormReady provides the resources and clear advice to establish these gathering places in the event of a natural disaster.

The program is sponsored by the National Weather Service, which goes out of its way to recognize communities that have worked with StormReady and prepared themselves for severe weather. Media, government, commercial endeavors, state and local emergency preparedness directors, and others all have a hand in the way StormReady can function within a city.

StormReady originally formed in Tulsa, Oklahoma—a region prone to tornadoes. Tulsa is not alone in its propensity for extreme weather, however. The rest of the Midwest is regularly subject to intense storms, floods from the Mississippi River, and the Southern United States is often prone to hurricanes, which lead to more flooding in the aftermath. In Florida, Indian Harbour Beach and Walt Disney World have been recognized by StormReady for their preparedness. And even though Indian Harbour Beach is less prone to severe weather compared to other communities up and down the panhandle, it sets a clear example of how to ready a community across the rest of the state.

Grade Potential, like StormReady, is a service provided to residents of Indian Harbour Beach for tutoring and academic preparation. Study skills, one-on-one help, and other expert approaches to learning are undertaken by each of our tutors in their sessions. Sometimes tutoring is undertaken when disaster has already hurt a grade—but, like StormReady demonstrates, learning to prepare for more is essential. Indian Harbour Beach tutors are there to counsel students in this endeavor.
