About Cocoa
Cocoa is a small, quirky town in the beautiful state of Florida, and there's a lot more to it than meets the eye. Located near the central coast of the sunshine state, Cocoa has been around since the late 1800s. Families that live here today enjoy a high quality of life and a fun, family-friendly atmosphere that just feels like "home". Whether you're a long-time resident, new to the area, or just passing through, Cocoa has a lot to offer.
For decades, Cocoa was primarily farmland, as the fertile soil here produced healthy orchards of various citrus fruits, and the climate was particularly great for growing these rare foods. Good irrigation didn't hurt either, and Cocoa remained a very small, farming community for a long time. It wasn't until the middle of the 1900s that Cocoa saw a significant change — the United States space program was gaining momentum and national attention. People from all around the country were flocking to this area in Florida, where they could view launches from nearby Cape Canaveral. Cocoa's population jutted up significantly, increasing by nearly ten thousand over the course of one year. The population continued to grow in the later half of the 1900s.
The local plants and wildlife have always been important to residents in Cocoa. Living in Florida provides many unique and rare species of flora and fauna, due in part to the unique climate and ideal conditions for certain tropical species. Cocoa is known for having an annual bird species count, in which local bird enthusiasts take part in counting all of the different individual bird species that inhabit Cocoa. This has been going on for centuries.
The cute downtown area of Cocoa is both quirky and historic, attracting tourists throughout the year. Beyond beautiful old buildings and historic landmarks, Cocoa is also home to several educational museums, including the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science, the Florida Historical Society Headquarters, and the very popular Eastern Florida State College Planetarium and Observatory, which brings in tourists from around the world. The Historic Cocoa Village area is a local favorite, with fun shops and fine dining options.
Families that live here in Cocoa love the local schools provided to their children. A handful of public elementary schools, a few public middle schools, and one public high school provide a high quality of education. There are also a few private school and charter school options, too. For students of any age or grade level, local Cocoa tutors are available to help in a wide variety of subjects. These local tutors can help each student reach their educational potential.
