About Cape Canaveral
Most will tell you that one of America’s proudest moments in its history was the moon landing. John F. Kennedy had set a goal of landing on the moon during his short time as president. Cape Canaveral became the home to America’s aerospace industry to make Kennedy’s dream become a reality. After Kennedy’s assassination in ‘63, the cape was officially renamed Cape Kennedy in honor of the late president. After Jackie Kennedy suggested the name change to the new President Johnson, he made it an executive order to change the name in memoriam of JFK. This name remained from 1963-1973. For those who were local to the area, this name was not favored. In ‘73 the legislature changed back to its original Cape Canaveral name which is over 400 hundred years old. The Kennedy family were understanding of this change and in return, the NASA space station kept the Kennedy Space Center name.
The Cape originally became a test site for missiles after President Harry Truman signed a legislation in 1949. This location was also ideal for rocket launches because of its advantage of the Earth’s rotation. Rockets would need to be launched East with the Earth’s rotation. Conveniently enough, east of the Cape is the Atlantic Ocean. This made the cape more ideal for if there were an accident, the rocket would land in the ocean. The Cape is now home to the Kennedy Space Station and the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Many space launches have been made from the Cape. In 1950 the V-2 rocket named Bumper 8 was the first to launch from here from Launch Complex 3. The first successful test firing of a Titan intercontinental ballistic missile was made in 1959 as well. Several NASA space flights were launched from this base. Project Mercury and Gemini were launched along with Apollo flights using the Saturn I and Saturn IB rockets.
The town of Cape Canaveral owes its growth to the space center and air force station. When the Great Depression hit, it took a toll on the town. Their economy was turned around for the better with the installation of the space program. Workforce and their economy already saw growth by 1958. Even today the area's economy and workforce relies on the space program and air force base stationed here. Inspired by their space program, the annual Sun and Space Festival was started in 1967. If you have dreams of getting into the space program, a tutor in your area can help you get the grades you need. The first Sun and Space Festival included a parade which stopped at the newly opened Museum of Sunken Treasure. Tourists even flock to the area for its rich space history and museums in the area. Here they can see where Kennedy began his space dream.
