A place that once was a battlefield and tore families apart is now bringing them together. Nash Farm Battlefield was the site for violent accounts during the civil war and again during the Atlanta campaign. Today, the once battlefield is now a popular place for school field trips and even weddings.
Battle of Lovejoy’s Station is the highlighted battle for the Nash Farm. Several soldiers accounts of the battle have been recorded and enjoyed by Civil War history buffs. Captain Burn’s account of the battle at Lovejoy recalls the day to be a beautiful sight. Burn’s describes the moment, “By Heaven, it was noble sight to see-by one who had no friend or brother there.” Later he recalls the moments meeting up with the enemy. He shows sympathy for the men before them who came out of the battle badly cut up. The enemy had them swarmed. Captain Burn’s account ends with the infantry lined up for the sabre charge towards Nash Farms.
Today a farmhouse that witnessed the battle still stands. The house is now turned into a museum for the battle grounds. In the museum several artifacts from the battles are stored. Visitors can take a step back in time and put themselves in the soldier’s shoes. Flags are always hung in honor of the 100 plus men who paid the final price in battle. Annual reenactments are held at the battlefield. Participants and visitors can relive history where it all happened. See real cannons be fired and experience what the soldiers may have seen during their days of battle.
There is a lighter side to McDonough that doesn’t involve muskets. Nash Farm Battlefield is now known for holding quaint weddings. A gazebo across from the Carriage House is ideal for holding intimate ceremonies. The Nash Farm activity barn holds up to 250 people, great for any celebration. Field trips or just weekend family outings are always welcome. Children can unearth their own hidden treasure during an archeologist activity, churn butter at a festival hear real stories from knowledgeable reinactors. Even a retired locomotive is at the Nash Farm where youngins can conduct their own stories. Old memories can passed on at the memorial where soldiers are laid to rest.
In 2008 the battlefield was marked as one of the most endangered fields in the US. Most of the battle grounds have been developed into housing leaving just 202 acres for the Nash Farm battlefield site. The battle site was once a place where most lives came to an end. Today, the Nash Farm is where the past can be re-lived only to create new memories and new beginnings. Battles continue today over whether or not to develop the rural farm grounds.
