Algebra Standards And Curriculums

Middle School

The School District of Philadelphia adopted Illustrative Math as its districtwide K–12 math curriculum starting in the 2023–24 school year, which has changed how many Philly students build toward algebra. In 6th and 7th grade, students work on ratios, proportional reasoning, and expressions. By 8th grade, they move into concepts like linear equations and functions. The PSSA continues to assess many of these math skills each spring.

High School

Many students take Algebra 1 in 9th grade, followed by Geometry and Algebra 2. The Algebra 1 Keystone Exam is given at the end of the course and is one pathway students can use to work toward Pennsylvania graduation requirements under Act 158. For many Philly families, Algebra 1 becomes an important year for building confidence, strengthening problem-solving skills, and staying prepared for the math courses that come next.

College

Students continuing into college often take College Algebra, Precalculus, or Linear Algebra at Temple, Drexel, or Community College of Philadelphia. Depending on the school and program, students may also need to take a math placement assessment before registering for certain courses. A strong algebra foundation can support placement, course planning, and a smoother path into math-heavy majors.

Algebra Test Scores

Students take the PSSA in math each spring from grades 3–8, and many take the Algebra 1 Keystone at the end of the course, often in high school. Across the district, grades 3–8 math proficiency has remained a major focus, with recent results showing about one in four students scoring Proficient or Advanced on the PSSA Math assessment.

Entrance Exam Test Scores

SAT Scores

The digital SAT includes a strong focus on algebra, including linear equations, systems, and functions. Local schools like Temple and Drexel may consider SAT scores depending on the program, application plan, or scholarship process. The reasoning skills students build in Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 can carry into many SAT Math questions, so steady practice can make a real difference.

Algebra 1 Keystone

The Algebra 1 Keystone covers two main areas: Operations and Linear Equations & Inequalities, and Linear Functions & Data Organization. Proficiency on the Keystone is one graduation pathway, but Act 158 gives Pennsylvania students several ways to meet statewide graduation requirements. Knowing which pathway fits can help families plan ahead, especially if a student needs more time or a different route to meet the requirement.

Algebra Programs and Resources

Math University Programs

For Philly students who want to go further in math, options may include school math teams, local MATHCOUNTS chapters, and competitive programs like the Philadelphia Math Olympiad. Algebra skills can also matter for students applying to special admission schools such as Central, Masterman, and Carver Engineering & Science, where prior grades, assessments, and school-specific criteria may factor into admissions.

Math Resources

The Free Library of Philadelphia offers free homework assistance through its LEAP program at branches across the city during the school year. Many families also use Khan Academy for extra practice with algebra and test prep. And with SEPTA delays, traffic on 76, and packed after-school schedules, having a tutor meet at home, online, or wherever learning works best can make consistent practice easier to fit into the week.
