    About Washington Heights

There are a few things that are widely known for being just down home American. Sports and apple pie have been long involved with American culture. Washington Heights itself has been home to five American professional sports clubs. Baseball teams have played a major role in the area’s history as well as some football teams. All of these teams have played or practiced at the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan. The Polo Grounds was the name for three stadiums used primarily for professional baseball and American football. The grounds were used for these sports from 1880 until 1963. After the original grounds was opened in 1876, it was demolished and rebuilt in 1889 for the game of polo. But the game was changed in 1880 when the New York Metropolitans leased the grounds as a baseball stadium. From then on the Polo Grounds made its mark as a professional American sports stadium.

The New York Metropolitans played at the original Polo Grounds from 1880 until 1885. In 1883 the New York Giants moved in and played until 1888. Professional American baseball was already on its way to becoming the country’s favorite pastime. In the 1860s the game was so popular semi-pro national baseball clubs were being formed. New York and the Manhattan area is home to the development of the game and a lot of its history. The Polo Grounds held other sporting events as well. Soccer, boxing, and Gaelic football were also played here. Do you need help with your grades? Ask a tutor in your area to help you with your school work and raise your grades. Even the infamous New York Yankees and Mets played at the Polo Grounds. The Yankees played here from 1913 to 1922 and the Mets played their first two seasons of ‘62 and ‘63 here. These grounds proudly hosted the Major League Baseball All-Star Games in 1934 and 1942. When football gained popularity and began to develop professional teams, the New York Brickley Giants, New York Giants and the New York Jets all played at the stadium. New York Giants played at the grounds from 1925 to 1955, the longest out of the three teams. The Polo Grounds did not remain the home for American sports in Manhattan. In 1964 the Shea Stadium was opened and the Polo Grounds was at its end. The grounds were replaced by the new stadium and demolished over four months to then be rebuilt as a public housing complex.

Washington Heights developed from an Irish and German neighborhood to a primarily Dominican one. Some of these Dominican immigrants would end up being baseball stars. Slugger Manny Ramirez grew up in the neighborhood after moving to the states from the Dominican Republic when he was 13 years old. He went on to be one of the nation’s largest baseball prospects. New York has seen the game of baseball grow into one of America’s greatest pastimes. Washington Heights has been home base for many great baseball moments.
