One of Valley Stream’s most beloved residents who was involved in the development and growth of the area passed away in 1964; his name was William R. Gibson. You may already be familiar with the area of Gibson or the Gibson train station; Valley Stream tutors say that these places were named after the famous Mr Gibson who began his career in property development in the late 1800s.
Gibson’s career began in his youth when he worked as a masonry and plaster contractor. He was responsible for building many developments in Queens, New York before coming to Long Island and constructing numerous houses in the Valley Stream vicinity. He bought up large pockets of land and built houses on some of Valley Stream’s most famous streets. The houses became a very popular choice for those who worked in white-collar jobs in the busy city of New York and were looking for more affordable housing and more space and a nicer environment to bring up families. On discovering this he made a direct request to the Long Island Railroad to add a stop to their current line in Valley Stream to make the commute into New York City easier and faster. According to Valley Stream tutors this was approved however the agreement called for Gibson to take on the burden of constructing the railway station himself should he wish his idea to come to fruition. Gibson took on the challenge and after some months of development the railroad officially opened in May of 1929. The station was named Gibson Station, and is still known as Gibson Station after William R. Gibson who built, designed and conceived the idea.
Gibson’s development company built upwards of two and a half thousand houses in Queens and he was then able to build more than one thousand in Valley Stream. His development company was able to design a method of construction that allowed them to build homes at a very rapid pace whilst maintaining the integrity of the build. This was years before the time of the widespread use of pre-fabricated housing. His firm belief was that the fastest turnaround to maintain his high standards and create quality and affordable housing was a turnaround of a twenty-four hour period. His thoughts were that this speed could not be improved upon as it would lead to an inferior product. At the time the new Gibson train station was built in Valley Stream the company used a slogan that perfectly described their mission it was “A House a Day.”
