    About Seguin

Just southeast of the city of New Braunfels and northeast of San Antonio, Seguin is a smaller city in south central Texas with a lot of history. Cited to be one of the oldest settlements in Texas, Seguin is known for having its start less than two years post Texas Revolution.

Considered to be a frontier settlement in Texas, Seguin has a lot of “old west” flavor. Home to the beginnings of the original Texas Rangers, Seguin was known to be where one of the most famous Rangers was from. Captain John Coffee “Jack” Hays, who joined the Texas Rangers under Sam Houston when he was only a teenager, became a well-known and revered captain of the Rangers later on in life. Seguin is proud to be the home of this local celebrity.

Nearly a century of farming and cattle ranches kept Seguin economically sound, providing work for locals and exports for surrounding areas. Even when the rest of the country was suffering at the hands of the Great Depression, Seguin kept its head above water thanks to the local oil discovery and subsequent oil boom.

To get the best sense of the rich history of old Seguin, tourists should make it a point to walk through the historic Main Street district. Many of Seguin’s original homes and buildings have been renovated, preserved, and protected, allowing for residents to hold on to the city’s treasured history. This area in Seguin is recorded in the National Register of Historic Places, even though many areas throughout town can be regarded as historic landmarks. Both walking and driving tours are available for tourists or residents that would like to get to know their town’s history a little better.

To commemorate the great farming land in this area, you can find a giant concrete pecan placed in front of the county courthouse in Seguin. Considered to be the “World’s Largest Pecan”, this unique statue commemorates the fact that Seguin is sometimes considered to be the “Pecan Capital of Texas”. This huge nut is a local favorite, and tourists can be found taking photos by the “nutty” landmark every day.

On a hot and humid Texas day, families of Seguin gather at the Seguin Aquatic Center. A great place to cool off, the Seguin Aquatic Center features a state-of-the-art wave pool, as well as the typical swimming pool, which is always busy. A nearby party area with a covered pavilion is also available for rental, which is a great place to host a birthday party or family reunion.
