    About Redwood City

With its revitalized downtown and a packed event calendar, Redwood City, California, is becoming a major entertainment destination in the San Francisco Peninsula. Perhaps the existence of several media companies in town subconsciously influences the city’s lightheartedness: Redwood City is home to video game publishers Electronic Arts, Visceral Games, and Crystal Dynamics, Inc. and movie-maker PDI/DreamWorks, the Northern California branch of DreamWorks Animation.

But much of the city’s festive atmosphere has nothing to do with video games or films. Redwood City has devoted lots of effort into making its downtown a magnet for shopping, dining, and don’t-miss events. Students who employ Redwood City tutors undoubtedly will have more time to sample the city’s offerings.

    Shopping
Major chains and independent retail stores line Redwood City’s downtown streets. In all, there are about a hundred retail stores, and the city has an online business guide to entice shoppers to its “anti-mall.”

    Dining
The city’s online dining guide lists, oh, nearly a hundred restaurants, everything from ethnic holes-in-the-wall to gastropubs to elegant dining. The guide gives parking tips, color-coded by time of day; for those who would rather leave their cars at home, the city is conveniently located along Caltrain’s route.

    City-sponsored Events
For fans of organized fun, Redwood City puts on some great events, including the following:

Music on the Square: Friday nights throughout the summer at the Courthouse Square feature a different band each week. Some represent a specific musical era, and others are tribute bands dedicated to preserving the music of a single artist, but all provide excitement and energy to start off the weekend.

Art on the Square: In conjunction with Music on the Square, Redwood City curates original arts and crafts for visitors to enjoy and purchase. Each Friday evening focuses on specific artists or crafts, but throughout the summer, painting, jewelry, woodwork, fiber art, glass, and photography will have a turn.

Fiestas Patrias: September brings this patriotic holiday from the Mexican culture. Live Mariachi music, Ballet Folklorico dancing, and authentic Mexican food provide for a culturally rich setting. A flag ceremony conducted by Consul General de Mexico helps elevate this celebration of Latin countries and cultures.

Salsa Festival: Everyone loves salsa, and Redwood City gives amateur and professional salsa chefs a chance to compete for prizes. Live music from three stages, tequila tasting, hands-on art projects, and a children’s play area make this event fun for the whole family.

Shakespeare in the Park: The San Francisco Shakespeare Festival comes to Redwood City several evenings in summer. The professional performances are free.

4th of July: Redwood City puts on the largest Independence Day parade in Northern California and has been doing so since 1939. The celebration also includes a fun run, pancake breakfast, festival and, of course, fireworks.

Redwood City knows how to have fun, and local students who tackle their homework with the help of Redwood City tutors have plenty of options for food and entertainment.
