Medina is a city in Ohio that was established in the early 1800’s. Medina is a rapidly growing community, that is proud of its roots, as well as its growth. Within the city, the Historic Medina Public Square is a picturesque time capsule of the city’s journey and overall success. The charm and beauty of the historical downtown area, attracts visitors and locals alike.
Medina began as a small community in 1818. But shortly after it was established, the community was given a land grant; with the condition that it would be the county seat of Medina county. As the new center of Medina county’s government, the town began to expand. The first county courthouse was built in 1921. Because the building was made out of brick, it is still there today; and is even used by a local business. Growth happened quickly; and before long, the town would build a larger courthouse, several city and federal government buildings, churches, theatres, and the impressive public library building. Medina was on its way to having the thriving city center that it has today.
Unfortunately, many of the original buildings and structures, would not last long. In 1870, a huge fire wiped out much of the downtown area. With dozens of the original wooden structures left in ruin, the only choice was to rebuild and start over. The morning after the fire, local leaders met and made a plan to ensure that a fire would never destroy the area again. This time, every building was made out of brick, and because of that decision, most of those buildings are still around today. Over the next couple of decades, the commercial area continued to expand and before long, the Victorian style brought new aesthetic flare to the town square area. Between the old brick and the new architectural flare,, Medina had a unique and vibrant feel to it.
Over time, the city continued to grow and develop; and began to trade in the historical look for a more modern edge. The old buildings were covered under false fronts, boarded in windows, large signs, and new design styles. The original feel of the town was almost completely abandoned. But in 1967, a group of Medina residents began an effort to restore the square back to its original, historic appearance. The Community Design Committee was formed, and began to work with local businesses and owners to restore and preserve the historic buildings. Today, the Medina Public Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and is a wonderful example of how a community can bring back the beauty of generations past. Medina could tutor other cities in how to recapture the heart of their community.
Medina tutors want all students to do well in school. If your student is struggling, a Medina tutor could be just what you need. Every student deserves the chance to succeed.
