According to Long Beach tutors at one time Long Beach was home to the world’s largest hotel; or so it was claimed by Brooklyn builder Austin Corbin who opened the Long Beach Hotel in the late 1800s.
In order to generate custom for his hotel, Corbin needed better infrastructure in order to bring in more guests. Corbin reached out to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). The LIRR began as a simple provider of a daily commuter service between New York and Boston via the Greenport terminal in Long Island, New York to Stonington, Connecticut. It was a ferry connection originally, and later the service became a land route. The LIRR had at the time acquired a poor reputation as much of its lines had fallen into a state of disrepair. Corbin was able to form a partnership and he successfully was able to then build a dedicated railroad from Lynbrook to Long Beach. He soon became the new railroad president following on from Conrad Poppenhusen and the LIRR rapidly grew as it began acquiring all of the railroads and smaller railroad companies in Long Island. Nowadays the system currently covers areas in the southeastern part of New York, from Manhattan to Suffolk County. Corbin was in part responsible for the expansion and continued growth of the railroad company. Today it is recognized as the busiest commuter railroad in North America, and it stays open around the clock. In the same respect according to Long Beach tutors, Corbin was responsible for the initial growth and development of Long Beach itself.
Corbin’s initial investment proved advantageous as he saw hundreds of thousands of visitors utilize the railroad in the first year, and decided to expand the railroad even further throughout the length of the island. Unfortunately these tracks did not remain for very long because of incessant flooding. The Long Beach Hotel consisted of a long row of almost thirty cottages nestled on the waterfront, right on the sand of the beach.
Corbin was also responsible for a plantation in Chicot County Arkansas and owned the Manhattan Beach Resort in Brooklyn. One of Corbin’s more industrious projects never came to fruition. He conceived the idea to create a rail passage between Bridgehampton and Montauk via a deep water port at Montauk which would essentially mean reducing the length of Trans-Atlantic passengers’ journey to New York City by a whole day.

Families share goals and scheduling preferences through a short intake. That information becomes a learner profile. Grade Potential then introduces your profile to a professional independent tutor whose background aligns. Once the tutor accepts, you’re introduced directly and sessions can begin.
Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
Typically within 2-3 business days, depending on subject, location, and schedule availability. Urgent timelines are noted in your profile so introductions prioritize your timing.
