    About Lansing

Along the Missouri River about 30-minutes northeast of Kansas City, the city of Lansing is named after pioneering settler James Lansing who came to the small community that was then called “Town of Progress” in the years following the Civil War. Familiarly known as Doc Lansing, he and his friend John Schmidt purchased 90 acres close to the Kansas State Penitentiary and named the area “Town of Lansing.” Housed in a historically accurate restoration of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Depot which was built in Lansing in 1887, the Lansing Museum chronicles the history of Lansing, Delaware Township, the railroads and the penitentiary. The Lansing Depot, used consistently from the late 1800’s through the middle of the twentieth century, was restored and moved in 1989 after threats of demolition. Ten years later the museum opened inside the restored depot with the support of the citizens of Lansing.

While Lansing is mostly a small residential community, it has its fair share of yearly events worth checking out. The Lansing DAZE Festival offers live entertainment, family activities, arts, crafts and a barbecue contest. On July 4, the skies over Lansing are lit up by the annual Independence Day fireworks show. Lansing’s Fall Festival takes place on Angel Falls Trail (a scenic trail with a small waterfall behind St. Francis Catholic Church) and gives local groups and organizations a chance to raise funds. Vendors and artisans also display their wares and provide demonstrations. For the kids, Lansing’s annual Fishing Derby in May caters to children 15 and under at Kenneth W. Bernard Community Park. It’s a certainty that a Lansing tutor can get you caught up on that difficult coursework so you can enjoy all that Lansing can offer.

Due to its proximity to downtown Kansas City there are a variety of attractions and activities available to Lansing residents with only a short drive. For those interested in history, Kansas City has several unique museums. The Kansas City Museum at Corinthian Hall is a small museum housing collections and artwork about Kansas City’s local and regional history including the Dyer Native American collection of cultural artifacts. Voted “Best U.S. Museum” by the website Yelp.com, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art houses art from throughout the world highlighted by the Bloch Galleries of impressionist and post-impressionist masterpieces, a Chinese collection with artwork spanning 5,000 years and photography encompassing the medium’s history from the middle 1800’s to the present day.

The Arabia Steamboat Museum in River Market close to the Missouri River is a time capsule of American frontier history. The Arabia was a vintage nineteenth century steamboat excavated in recent years and turned into a museum. It holds the largest assortment of pre-Civil War artifacts in the world. Yet another unique historical collection in Kansas City is the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, founded in 1990 as a showcase for African-American baseball with memorabilia dating back to the late 1800’s.
