Huntersville Tutors Come To You

Along the shores of Lake Norman and just east of the Catawba River, Huntersville, North Carolina is ranked in the top five of the best suburbs in the Charlotte metropolitan area. Originally occupied by the Catawba Native Americans, the land which would become Huntersville was first explored by Europeans in the 16th century. At that time the Catawba numbered about 10,000 and controlled important trade routes throughout North Carolina. European infringement, however, struck a devastating blow to the Catawba. Constant trade wars with Europeans and other native tribes as well as disease steadily decreased the Catawba’s numbers so that by the time of the American Revolution there were fewer than 500 individuals. This did not stop them from helping Colonials in the fight for independence against the British and the Cherokee, traditional Catawba enemies. At the Battle of Clapp’s Mill near Burlington, the Catawba helped Colonial militia defeat British forces led by General Cornwallis. The Catawba eventually wound up on a reservation near Rock Hill, South Carolina. In recent years, their numbers have swelled to about 2,800. Huntersville is near the site of another revolutionary battle at Cowan’s Ford between Colonials and Cornwallis. The battle is noteworthy for the death of General William Lee Davidson whose name would later grace the town of Davidson, north of Huntersville, and Davidson College.

In the years after the revolution, German, Irish and Scottish settlers began establishing homes and farms in Huntersville. The thick rich soil created by the Catawba River proved to be perfect for cotton and Huntersville became a cotton manufacturing center in the years after the Civil War. Up until the 1870’s the town had been named Craighead but that was changed to Huntersville in honor of landowner and cotton farmer Robert Hunter. During the middle of the 20th century Duke Power began buying up farms in the area to build a hydroelectric dam and create a large lake north of Huntersville. Named after Duke President Norman Atwater Cocke, Lake Norman has more than 500 miles of shore line. Today, Huntersville is an affluent suburb receiving an overall grade of A+ by the real estate website Niche with median household incomes exceeding $90,000 a year. More than fifty percent of Huntersville residents have a Bachelor’s degree or better.

A Huntersville tutor will keep you caught up on your most difficult academic subjects so you can enjoy the many things to do in the area. Historic Rural Hill Farm in Huntersville offers major events throughout the year such as the Scottish Festival & Loch Norman Highland Games and the NC Brewer’s & Music Festival. The Highland Games in April is a family friendly celebration which mimics the age-old Scottish games with traditional Highland dancing, whiskey tasting, bagpipes and feats of strength by burly competitors dressed in kilts. One month later the Brewer’s & Music Festival features craft breweries offering their finest libations along with a variety of musical performers. Both events take place on the 265-acre historic plantation which is open year-round to visitors.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Latta Plantation Nature Preserve near the site of the historic cotton farm has over 1,400 acres and is Mecklenburg County’s largest natural area. The preserve includes a nature center and access to Mountain Island Lake in the Catawba River. There are over 16 miles of trails including the 3.1-mile Buzzard Rock trial which takes hikers and horseback riders to the Buzzard Rock outcropping with scenic views of the river and Mountain Island. The preserve also features boat docks and excellent fishing opportunities.
