    About Cutler Bay

Southern Miami-Dade County began with a lively Native American history, including wars with the Seminole Indians, which was the only tribe in America who never signed a peace treaty. The earliest settlers in the Cutler Bay region, however, were the Tequesta, who inhabited this land for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. Desperate to settle and cultivate this area, this led the United States government to offer federal land grants to pioneers who made the promise to attract other settlers and make improvements to the land. One of those settlers was Dr. William Cutler, who purchased 600 acres, with a dream to operate a farming utopia. Though Cutler never achieved his dream farm settlement on what is now called Biscayne Bay, the land was still attractive enough to retain a few settlers.

Thus, Cutler Bay was born when these settlers established a town in honor of Dr. Cutler, although the historic location of Cutler’s original town was located several miles to the northeast. These same settlers also created the first post office south of Miami, cutting a trail that connected Cutler to Coconut Grove. That same trail is today what was the beginning of Old Cutler Road. The settlers of South Miami-Dade endured many environmental catastrophes, including devastating hurricanes in 1926 and 1935 — but the worst disaster for Cutler Bay occurred nearly 60 years later — Hurricane Andrew!

Rising out of the rubble, Cutler Bay was rebuilt and has become one of Miami’s most sought after communities with its parks, marina, tropical gardens, banyan trees, and miles of bicycle and walking trails. With direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, boating enthusiasts will be charmed by the marina, the winding canals—not to mention beautiful South Florida beaches. There is something to offer for everyone, young and old alike, such as savvy shopping centers, exciting entertainment, delicious dining, myriads of movies, tantalizing theaters, and marvelous museums.

Because Cutler Bay is actually part of an ancient coral formation, one of the most historical and interesting places to visit is the Charles Deering Estate, located in nearby Palmetto Bay, which contains the Cutler Fossil Site. Imagine a place where over 10,000 years ago mammoths and saber-toothed tigers roamed, and an abundance of California condors soared above. Tequesta burial mounds can also be found there.

Another big attraction today is the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, whose events have delighted people of all ages and cultures with international entertainers, as well as such events as Indian Tabla Players, Comics, Concerts, Dance, Poetry Festival … and even an Underwater Bubble Show for the kids!

Are you a nature lover … or do you need to escape from all the hustle and bustle for a while? Whispering Pines Park, which includes a covered playground and picnic area, is the perfect place for families to spend quieter time together. Whatever your particular pleasure may be, you and your children will not have reason to be bored! Within South Miami-Dade County, you will find that Cutler Bay has it all!
