In the populous borough of Brooklyn within the beautiful city of New York City, Crown Heights is a beautiful community with a rich history and a diverse population. Located near the central region of Brooklyn, Crown Heights had a different name until the early 1900s. Known as Crow Hill, the community changed its name when a popular street was constructed to run through the area, and that street was known as “Crown Street”. Crown Heights is a great place to live, and the families that live here feel that the borough of Brooklyn has a lot to offer.

For a long period of time, this area of Brooklyn was where the some of the most affluent residents of New York City lived. Many of the rich upper class citizens of New York City purchased homes here in Crown Heights as summer homes or secondary residences. Evidence of this rich influence in the community’s structure can be found in the gorgeous, historic brownstone houses that are located through many of the local neighborhoods. The Imperial Apartments located here in Crown Heights are also historical homes of the rich and famous, and stand out because of their unique architectural design.

Throughout the middle of the twentieth century, Crown Heights was known to be a community that primarily consisted of Jewish families. Soon, the climate changed a bit as more immigrants made their way to these neighborhoods, including many immigrants from Jamaica and the Caribbean. The African American population underwent a significant growth here during the late 1900s. There are many unique cultural festivals that take place here in Crown Heights that are a testament to the local diversity. The Labor Day Carnival is a fun and vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture. One reason why many families love living in Crown Heights is purely because of this beautiful cultural diversity.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is located here in Crown Heights, and brings many visitors from around the country every year. Over twenty acres of gardens, ponds, greenhouse areas, and unique natural areas provide a great place for local Crown Heights residents to enjoy the beauty of nature while living in New York City.

Served by the New York Department of Education, Crown Heights students have access to many local public schools, including elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Beyond these public schools, there are also several private schools and charter schools for local families to choose from.
