    About Boerne

A beautiful picture of small-town America, Boerne is a small city in south central Texas with a lot of personality. Here, in the heart of Texas, you’ll find a tight-knit community of unique people with a peaceful, quiet atmosphere. With German heritage and a vibrant culture that reflects the history of the region, Boerne is a great place to live and a fun place to visit.

With a wide variety of things to do, Boerne attracts many tourists from all around the country. A great place to plan a weekend getaway, Boerne boasts activities to suit the outdoor adventurer or the small-town shopper.

Every year, Boerne hosts the Guadalupe Valley Poetry Celebration, and it is fitting to have it here. Boerne, after all, is named after a writer that settled in this area. Boerne got its start as a settlement initiated by the Texas Hill Country Free Thinker Latin Settlements back in the 1840s, and man of the town’s initial settlers enjoyed intellectual conversations in Latin. A group of highly progressive thinkers, the people of Boerne were known for their heated talks about popular issues of the time, including providing basic human rights to all people.

With many of its residents of German decent, Boerne takes pride in its German heritage. A local singing club, the Boerne Village Band, has been singing together since the 1860s! Of course, generations later, the original singers are no longer with us, but the old tradition is cited as being the most ancient group (outside of Germany, of course) of German singers to be singing together. Boerne is known throughout the state and the country for having strong German traditions such as this.

Nature lovers visiting Boerne should take some time to check out the Cibolo Nature Center, which provides access to a variety of different ecosystems that are present in this area of Texas. The outdoor enthusiast will love taking nature walks and bird watching in the area surrounding the Nature Center. Two local caves are also available to tour – the Cave Without a Name and Cascade Caverns are interesting local landmarks of Boerne.

Boerne’s location is less than a twenty-minute drive from San Antonio, allowing all of Boerne’s residents access to San Antonio’s big city amenities. Residents love having access to these resources while enjoying life in a smaller community nearby. Many residents of Boerne find the commute to San Antonio for work to be a very easy distance.
