West New Brighton is a neighborhood in Staten Island, New York. West New Brighton is probably best known for the Staten Island Zoo. The Staten Island Zoo was built on land donated to the city by Julia Hardin. Hardin had three stipulations when she donated the land: it was not to be used for a playground, it needed to be named after her brother-in-law, Civil War Major Clarence Barrett, and her husband was to be allowed to live in the house on the property for the rest of his life. When Colonel Hardin passed away, the city took over “Barrett Park,” and the Staten Island Institute for Arts and Sciences began to plan for a zoo. The Staten Island Zoological Society was established in 1933, and would play an essential role in the zoo’s formation and its eventual day to day operations.
The zoo was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933 and 1934. The new state of the art facility cost $150,000 to build. That would be $2.8 million today. The zoo’s exhibits and animal care procedures were far ahead of their time, and really stood out when other zoos of the time became old fashioned and outdated. The zoo also took a huge step forward when they decided to devote themselves to becoming the nation’s first educational zoo. The zoo started with monthly lectures on site, lessons at the local schools, and tours for school children. In 1942, the zoo hired Dr. Patricia O’Connor, the first female full-time Veterinarian to be on the staff of an American zoo. O’Connor created educational programs for hospital children, provided educational courses for local high school teachers and educators, and helped establish local animal and wildlife clubs. Today, the zoo still offers onsite lessons, school visits, and educational programs. There is even an onsite veterinary clinic that provides internship programs for college students who are studying to become Veterinary Technicians and Veterinarians. The zoo also has a lecture auditorium, classroom, and private library. Over the years, the Staten Island Zoo has tutored countless visitors on various topics relating to animals and zoology.
The zoo has come a long way from the original barn that housed its small collection of animals, while the exhibits were being constructed. Today, the zoo has over 1,500 animals that represent over 350 different species. Staten Island Zoo is also home to the first International Snake Exhibit, and houses the biggest and most complete collection of rattlesnakes in North America. The zoo has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums since 1988, and maintains a proud tradition of top quality animal care and exhibits.
