    About San Dimas

Nestled between the 10 and 210 freeways in the foothills straddling the San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys, San Dimas, California is conveniently located to the east of downtown Los Angeles and within short driving distance to the Angeles National Forest. The land which is now San Dimas was originally part of the Mexican land grants Rancho San Jose and Rancho La Puente. Legend has it that Rancho San Jose owner Don Ygnacio Palomares named San Dimas after St. Dismas, the “Penitent Thief” described in the New Testament. It seems the Don had been plagued by horse thieves who hid in the secluded canyons which he came to refer to as San Dismas, hoping that such a name would convince the rustlers to see the error of their ways and repent by returning the pilfered stock. Later, residents dropped the middle s and the area became San Dimas. Larger settlement didn’t occur, however, until the coming of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1887. Soon enough, small farmers began growing wheat but eventually turned to citrus which thrived, leading to the establishment of packing plants as oranges and lemons began shipping east. Successful citrus grower and packer Sunkist, originally named “Sunkissed,” originated in San Dimas. Today, San Dimas is no longer known for its citrus as the orange trees have been supplanted by roads, freeways, shopping centers and residential areas.

A San Dimas tutor will get you caught up on your toughest academic subjects so you can take some time away from the books to enjoy the exciting things to do in San Dimas and the greater Los Angeles region. For those who wish to know more about the impact of railroads in California, the Pacific Railroad Society Museum in the renovated San Dimas railroad depot features artifacts and exhibits from the early days of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The museum is home to two actual railway cars including the Descanso, a Los Angeles Railway streetcar which has been restored to its original condition when first placed on the tracks in 1909.

Typically, San Dimas summers are warm so the place to be is Raging Waters where residents and visitors alike can cool off at California’s largest waterpark. Raging Waters has several exhilarating slides including the Aqua Rocket, Dark Hole and Dragon’s Den. The park also features wave pools, and winding rivers. The Amazon Adventure river ride is a quarter mile long and can accommodate up to 600 raft riders. The Splash Island Adventure is a family oriented mixture of slides, water cannons and swinging bridges. The 50-acre park is visited by thousands of fun seekers each summer.

For more outdoor fun, the Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park is a large green space in the middle of San Dimas right next door to Raging Waters. The park is nearly 2,000 acres surrounding Puddingstone Lake with a variety of amenities such as hiking, biking and horseback trails, picnic grounds, swimming and camping. Designated as a fishing and recreational area in the 1950’s the park has undergone numerous improvements over the years and is now one of the best outdoor facilities in Los Angeles County.
