Long before beach bums lined the coast of what is now Malibu, California, this land was inhabited by the native people, the Chumash Native Americans. Before it got its modern name of “Malibu”, this region was called “Humaliwo” which as to do with the sound the ocean makes. These people lived on this land long before the Spanish explorers came here, and long before the local Spanish missions were established. This land has a long history, and you can feel it as you watch the sunset in Malibu.
An interesting fact about Malibu that you probably didn’t know is that Malibu is the location of the first successful model of a laser. This all took place back in the 1960s at a local research facility. Since then, there have been other technological advances here in Malibu, including the invention of a computer code language called FastScat. So Malibu isn’t all sunsets, surfers, and socialites after all!
Life in paradise isn’t always perfect, however, and Malibu is no exception to the natural disasters that Mother Nature tends to throw its way. With a susceptibility to wildfires, Malibu has seen its share of dangerous fires. As a result, there have been many large-scale mudslides throughout the years here in Malibu.
