In the southeastern region of Los Angeles County, Hacienda Heights is a primarily residential community with a long history in this part of Southern California. Thanks to the rich, fertile soil in the San Gabriel Valley, these farmers were very successful, and the area became known for its citrus production, as well as profitable local avocado and walnut orchards, too.

When the Great Depression hit, life changed for people in what is now called Hacienda Heights. At that time, this area was highly rural and agricultural, being comprised mainly of farmland and small ranches. Because of the financial strain of the Great Depression, farmers could no longer pump as much money into keeping their farms healthy in their fight against local pests and diseases. Farms were lost, land was sold, and many housing developments popped up taking the place of these once profitable orchards.

Home to the biggest Buddhist Temple in the country, Hacienda Heights brings in a fair amount of local religious tourism as a result. Hsi Lai Temple is a sight to be seen, with grand architectural features and a striking beauty in contrast to its suburban surroundings. The translation of "Hsi Lai" is "Coming West", which is symbolic of its location here in Southern California.

When it comes to education, parents are happy with the choices they have for their children here in Hacienda Heights. Hacienda La Puente Unified School District oversees three public high schools, two public middle schools, three public K-8 schools, and eight public elementary schools. Besides the public schools available, there are also several private schools and charter schools to choose from.
