It was a popular road for a long time until new, more efficient highway systems were designed and constructed, and in the 1980s it was removed from the official highway system and is now considered to be a tourist destination instead.

Looking back even further in Duarte’s history you will find that the original inhabitants of this region were the Tongva Native American people. They lived on this land for thousands of years, even before the Spanish explorers arrived to California. Even though the fertile soil was an attractive feature of the San Gabriel Valley, the Tongva people preferred to live off of the wild, natural vegetation of the region. Because of the big, wild oak trees that grow so easily in this area, a portion of the Tongva diet was made from acorns. The Tongva also feasted on local berries and other local foods that naturally grew in this area.

Being close to Los Angeles provides residents of Duarte with a lot of opportunities, including access to more jobs in a wide variety of industries, all within an easy commute. For residents of school-age, the Duarte Unified School District provides a number of local public schools, from elementary school through high school.
