About Agoura Hills

A small city within Los Angeles County, Agoura Hills is known for its beautiful mountainous backdrop and its location close to the downtown area of Los Angeles in Southern California.

Many thousands of years ago, the land that is now where Agoura Hills is located was once home to the Chumash Native American tribe. It wasn’t until the Spanish explorers came to this area in the late 1700s that things started to change for this region. When the Spanish arrived, they also brought their Catholic religious beliefs, and they hoped to spread these beliefs and traditions to all of the local people. Establishing missions throughout this area of California, the Spanish set up many rancheros and farm lands as well. A famous road throughout California known as El Camino Real runs through this area, and Agoura Hills was established as a popular stop along this traveling route.

Once the Ventura Freeway was constructed along Highway 101 through the south western region of California back in the late 20th century, the community of Agoura Hills began to experience modern growth. The residential areas of the city grew, and new neighborhoods were constructed. Agoura Hills’ close proximity to Los Angeles makes Agoura Hills a great place to live for commuters who work in the big city.

Agoura Hills is known for its music community. Known for producing musicians since the 1960s, Agoura Hills has seen a lot of change, and many diverse genres of music come through the area. When crime began to rise in the late 20th century, the city of Agoura Hills decided to put a bigger emphasis back on community programs that promoted music for the city’s youth, in an effort to help keep the city’s kids out of trouble.

For those who love running, you’ll be interested to know that Agoura Hills hosts the Great Race every year. Located in Chumash Park, this race includes a number of events, including two half marathons, a 10k race, a 5k race, a kids’ mile, and a fun run for the whole family. This popular event attracts runners from around the nation.

Agoura Hills is home to three elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools. These public schools are all located within the Las Virgenes Unified School District. Providing a high quality education to all of the students in Agoura Hills is of utmost importance. For students that may require extra help, local Agoura Hills tutors are available.
