    About Staten Island

Staten Island is one of New York City’s five boroughs. Boroughs are county level administrative divisions, and in this case, they act as a way to differentiate the different areas of New York City. The five boroughs of New York City are Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. Staten Island is located at the very bottom of New York State; and is known for its proximity to the bay, its art and culture scene, its historical preservation, and its conservation and appreciation of the great outdoors.

Staten Island is completely surrounded by ocean waters, and borders several bays. The historic and iconic waters offer many activities and attractions for locals and visitors alike. One of Staten Island most famous attractions is the Staten Island Ferry. The Ferry has been operating since 1906, and runs between Staten Island and Manhattan. Every year more than 1.5 million tourists ride the free Ferry as it takes them on a tour of some of New York’s most iconic landmarks, including Governors Island and the Statue of Liberty.

The Island is also known for its art scene. Many artists, musicians, and filmmakers have moved to the area because it has a short commute to Manhattan, but is a much more affordable place to live. The community’s local arts council supports local artists and organisations, by awarding re-grants (renewing grants or awarding them again), providing workshops, supporting folklife, creating arts-in-education programs, and actively advocating for the arts. Staten Island also has a four day film festival that was created by the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation. The Island is also home to several musical ensembles, and theatre troupes. Staten Island could tutor other places in how to help their local artists thrive.

Staten Island is also home to Historic Richmond Town. The town is a living history village and museum complex. The village follows American history from the colonial days to current events. It has twenty-eight landmarked buildings including homes, commercial and civic buildings, the oldest schoolhouse in the U.S., and a museum. Visitors can watch period carpenters, tinsmiths, and blacksmiths demonstrate their trades, and learn how to make soup. There are also opportunities to stay overnight, watch reenactments, participate in workshops, and visit New York City’s oldest continuously working farm. Staten Island is also home to fouteen other museums and the Staten Island Zoo.

Staten Island also has several parks, beaches, greenbelts, and wildlife refuges. The state of New York works hard to preserve its natural spaces, and help protect several species that specifically come to the Island for nesting and breeding. The Island is a great place for outdoor recreation, and picturesque views of nature. Staten Island has a lot to offer, and is a great place for locals and visitors alike.

Staten Island tutors want to see every student do well in school. If your student is struggling in school, a Staten Island tutor could be just what you need. Every student deserves the chance to succeed.
